Paid Intern Leadership Development Program

Our Paid Intern Leadership Development Program is a flagship initiative of the HBCU CN designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders from HBCUs. Through this immersive, hands-on program, students gain real-world experience in key public health issue areas while developing the leadership, research, and communication skills they need to drive change in their communities and beyond.

Program Overview

This competitive internship program is tailored for HBCU students who are passionate about:

  • Behavioral Health 
  • Public Health 
  • Sexual and/or Reproductive Health
  • Substance Use Prevention
  • Violence Prevention and Intervention

Interns receive a stipend for their work and are working on meaningful projects that contribute to community wellness, advocacy, and systemic change.

Program Structure

The internship experience includes:

  • Orientation & Core Trainings: Interns begin with foundational training in public health principles, equity frameworks, and communication tools.
  • Fieldwork & Applied Learning: Interns collaborate with campus or community partners on real-world projects aligned with their interest area.
  • Capstone Presentation: Interns complete the program by presenting a final project that demonstrates their learning and impact.

Eligibility

This internship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students attending HBCUs who have an interest in public health, community engagement, or social justice. We welcome students across a variety of majors including but not limited to:

Public Health

Psychology

Biology

Sociology

Health Education

Political Science
